The Exciting Upcoming Films

By Andrew Halley

Pixar announced its shortlist of upcoming features during Disney’s 2020 Investor Day. We break them all down!

The latest Pixar release was Onward in early March, but because of the Covid-19 pandemic, it was shortly made available on Disney+ only a few weeks later.

It starred Tom Holland and Chris Pratt as two elfen brothers on a quest to bring their father back with the help of sorcery. It received favorable reviews from critics and audiences alike.

On Christmas Day, the studio’s next feature, Soul, also becomes available on Disney+.

Soul follows the departed spirit of Jazz Musician Joe Gardner in a spectral world known as “The Great Before,” the opposite of “The Great Beyond.” He aids incoming souls in their troubles before they are sent to inhabit Earth.

The first new film announced on Investor Day was Luca, scheduled for June 2021. It will center on the tale of a young boy, Luca, and his best friend during a summer in a seaside Italian city.

However… things are not what they seem, as the boys are actually sea creatures from another world. It is directed by Enrico Casaros, who previously directed the Pixar short La Luna.

Pixar also announced Turning Red for Spring 2022. In this one, a teenage girl Mei Lee “poofs” into a giant red panda.

We’ve got a ton of questions… but hopefully we’ll learn more from Pixar and the films director Domi Shee, who directed the heartwarming short BAO.

Lastly, an origin story to the Space Ranger himself… Lightyear flies in summer 2022. The film explores how Toy Story’s Buzz Lightyear came to be a defender of the Galactic Alliance.

In 2001, Disney produced Buzz Lightyear of Star Command, a cartoon series following Buzz and his crew as they battled against the forces of evil commanded by the Evil Emperor Zurg.

After four original titles, Buzz finally gets a standalone feature. Will it top his epic appearance from the opening of Toy Story 2?

The future of movies is unclear, but it’s great to know that at least in the animation world there are plenty of exciting things to look forward to.
