Movies to watch: this week’s best DVD and Blu-ray releases

Hello, and welcome to our weekly pick of movies that you can feast your eyes upon from the comfort of your living room this week, in which we comb through the latest releases on DVD, Blu-ray and digital platforms.

This round-up focuses on the biggest new releases making their way to home ents straight from the cinema, as well as the modern greats and golden oldies that have been upscaled to 4K and given a much-deserved re-release. We’ll also be looking out for some of the swankiest boxsets vying to take pride of place on your living room shelves.

So, here’s our guide to some of the best movies available to take home from Monday 11 November – as well as a handful of our favourite films to have hit the shelves over the last few weeks. And don’t forget to pop back next week for more recommendations.

New releases

Spider-Man: Far From Home

DVD | Blu-ray | 4K | Digital

Picking up after the events of Avengers: Endgame, the second solo outing for Tom Holland’s Spider-Man sees our friendly neighbourhood wallcrawler dealing with the aftermath of the death of his mentor, Tony Stark, by heading off on a European vacation with his classmates, including the girl of his dreams, MJ (Zendaya). It’s not long before Nick Fury recruits him for world-saving duties once again, though, as the destructive Elementals make their MCU debut. Luckily, he’s given a helping hand by his fishbowl-headed new super-friend, Mysterio (Jake Gyllenhaal). Keep your eyes peeled for two key extra scenes mid- and post-credits. (Check out our review.)

Diego Maradona

DVD | Blu-ray | Digital

A documentary focusing on the infamous Argentinian football legend, this rise-and-fall story zeroes in on his explosive time at Italian club Napoli, the fallout from his “hand of God” goal at the 1986 World Cup in Mexico and his strained relationship with his son, Diego Jr. Director Asif Kapadia sifted through a whopping 500 hours of footage to compile a new perspective on Maradona. His previous projects include award-winning docs Senna and Amy, so he’s certainly got form with this kind of thing.

The Stanley Kubrick Film Collection

Blu-ray (two films in 4K)

Christmas is approaching (faster than we’d like, to be honest), and that can mean only one thing: boxsets! The only thing that’s really different about this “limited edition” collection of Stanley Kubrick’s works (other than some stylish box art) is that two of them – seminal sci-fi 2001: A Space Odyssey and horror masterpiece The Shining – come in super-shiny 4K. The rest – Lolita, A Clockwork Orange, Full Metal Jacket, Barry Lyndon and Eyes Wide Shut – are Blu-ray only. The set also includes the ace documentary Stanley Kubrick: A Life in Pictures, but beware: it comes with a hefty price tag of 90 quid. Not worth shelling out if you’ve already got them, then, but a potential festive treat for any Kubrick fan who doesn’t.

James Bond: The Daniel Craig Collection

4K

Ahead of next April’s release of No Time To Die, Daniel Craig’s fifth (and final?) big-screen outing as James Bond, this set 4K-ifies his previous four runouts as the suave super-spy: Casino Royale, Quantum Of Solace, Skyfall and Spectre. The quality of the films themselves varies (even if some of the Den Of Geek team are secret apologists for Solace, Craig’s messy sophomore 007 adventure), but this collection is a decent primer for what we imagine will be the actor’s big, action-tastic goodbye. For hardened Bond fans eager to upgrade to ultra hi-def, though, it might be worth waiting for a more complete series collection.

Marvel Cinematic Universe: Phase Three – Part Two

DVD | Blu-ray | 4K 

Another big boxset release is this Infinity Saga-capping collection, which includes the last remaining instalments of the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s Phase Three: Black Panther, Avengers: Infinity War, Ant-Man And The Wasp, Captain Marvel, Avengers: Endgame and Spider-Man: Far From Home. If you’ve skipped the individual releases, you’ll be rewarded with some nifty box art, theatrical posters, art cards and an extra disc of bonus features. The Phase One, Phase Two and Phase Three: Part One sets are also available.

Leon: Director’s Cut

4K

Luc Besson’s iconic 1994 thriller gets the 4K treatment, and is always a welcome rewatch. Jean Reno stars as the titular assassin, who takes young Mathilda (Natalie Portman, in her first big-screen role) under his wing after her family is killed by corrupt DEA agent Stansfield (Gary Oldman). Running 23 minutes longer than the theatrical release, this Director’s Cut focuses more on the developing bond between Leon and Mathilda, giving the film’s ending even more heft. It’s also notable for Oldman’s terrifying turn as the psychopathic Stansfield – one of the all-time great movie villains.

Still out, still good

Apollo 11

DVD | Blu-ray | 4K | Digital

One small step for man, one giant leap for mankind… The space mission that sent Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin to the moon is retold in spectacular style in this buzzy documentary. Comprised completely of digitally enhanced archive footage, director/editor Todd Douglas Miller uses some ingenious cutting to piece together a tense, thrilling and immersive version of events without the need for narration, talking heads or dramatic recreations.

Toy Story 4

DVD | Blu-ray | 4K | Digital

Woody and co are back for a brand new adventure, as the toys head off on a road trip to rescue their new owner Bonnie’s craft project-turned-best bud, Forky. Cue a host of new characters (look out for Keanu Reeves’ tortured Canadian daredevil Duke Caboom), the welcome return of Bo Peep and another heartwarming – and, this being Toy Story, unsurprisingly moving – tale. Midsommar: Director’s Cut

Blu-ray

Director Ari Aster stitches 24 minutes of extra horror into his terrifying Hereditary follow-up. In it, a group of American students take a trip to a remote Swedish commune where their summer festivities are about to commence. Taking place almost entirely in bright daylight, it’s visually stunning and – typically for Aster – pretty damn disturbing, too. There are some images here you just can’t unsee and the whole thing plays out like a bad trip. Also, Florence Pugh as the lead is terrific. Wee warning though: at 171 minutes, it’s looooonnng… (Check out our review of the theatrical version.)

John Wick: Chapter 3 – Parabellum

Keanu Reeves returns for a third outing as the black-suited uber-assassin John Wick, who’s on the run thanks to a $14 million bounty being placed on his head. His only option? To prepare for war… Director Chad Stahelski is back behind the camera for this neon-soaked action extravaganza, orchestrating some of the series’ best and most brutal set-pieces yet.
