What Joe Hill Likes the Most About NOS4A2

The celebrated author reflects on the AMC horror series as NOS4A2 season one comes to a close.

This Sunday night (Jul. 29) will mark the season one finale of NOS4A2, the acclaimed AMC horror series based on the epic novel from Joe Hill.

The show is going out with a bang, as episodes nine and ten will air back to back, and the good news for fans is that AMC officially renewed the program for a second season last week, announcing at San Diego Comic-Con that it will return to continue the story of two young, strangely gifted women, Vic McQueen (Ashleigh Cummings) and Maggie Leigh (Jakhara Smith), as they battle the ancient psychic vampire and child killer known as Charlie Manx (Zachary Quinto).

While the ratings for NOS4A2 have been steady if not spectacular, Hill told us when we spoke with him at Comic-Con that he’s pleased with the response to the show. “I mean, I think it’s been pretty well received,” he noted. “It seems like there’s a core audience that seems to really dig what’s going on in it.”

Hill continued, “I love Ashleigh Cummings and Jahkara Smith, who are the two leads, and I think they’re really a kind of Butch and Sundance pair. We’re kind of not so used to seeing a show carried by two young women whose friendship kind of defines the program, and in a cultural sense, I think that’s sort of interesting. So yeah, NOS4A2 has been a lot of fun.”

Season one of NOS4A2, according to Hill, will only have gotten a little less than halfway through the source material by the time it wraps up on Sunday night, so there is a lot more ground for showrunner Jami O’Brien and her excellent cast to cover when the show presumably returns in 2020. In the meantime, Manx will keep his Wraith’s engine running and we’ll have more shortly from Joe Hill on his new comics line and his upcoming short story collection.
