Don’t be fooled by the description of “Ghouli,” the fifth episode of this season of The X-Files revival; it may be a monster-of-the-week episode, but there’s a lot more going on than is apparent at first glance. The good news is that FOX has some extra content for viewers to check out in advance of the airing that can be enjoyed on its own or as an element that will actually be appearing in the story.
Written and directed by James Wong, who wrote some of the most classic episodes of The X-Files along with his writing partner Glen Morgan, “Ghouli” will tell the story of two teenage girls, each of whom are convinced that the other is really a monster in disguise. During the investigation, Mulder and Scully come across a website about the beastie in question: ghouli.net, and the blog, which is filled with fan fiction among other things, actually exists and can be perused now.
There’s plenty to enjoy in the below clip from the upcoming episode besides the appearance of the website. In addition to Mulder being a bit jaded about monsters these days in comparison with classic, more psychologically complex creatures like Frankenstein, he also pulls a classic move with the barista when he has to give his name. Take a look:
More good news: in addition to being a monster-centric episode, the investigation featured in “Ghouli” supposedly will contain some hints that could lead back to Scully’s long lost son, William. As a result, the episode will be able to be enjoyed on many levels. Tune in to this week’s The X-Files on Wednesday, January 31, 2018 at 8:00pm ET to see the full story surrounding the ghouli.
