The Umbrella Academy Season 3: What To Expect
With another apocalypse avoided but not much back to normal, it’s time to speculate on what The Umbrella Academy season 3 will look like.

There’s no denying that The Umbrella Academy season 2 provided plenty of closure for the immediate dangers of Vanya’s explosive power, which was at the center of both apocalypses in the first two seasons. However, even though the Hargreeves siblings are no longer displaced in time, there’s plenty of conflict left to resolve. The Umbrella Academy season 3 won’t return for awhile, but we can take some educated guesses as to where things might be headed.
First of all, the likelihood of Five witnessing another world-ending scenario that he must convince his siblings to help him avoid is very low. It’s quite remarkable that The Umbrella Academy was able to return to that well in season 2 without becoming repetitive, but doing it a third time would probably be pushing it, especially since there are so many consequences that a season 3 could explore regarding changes to the timeline wrought by the team’s time in the past.
The existence of The Sparrow Academy and the resurrection of sorts for both Ben and Reginald Hargreeves are two of the most obvious differences in this version of 2019. The Umbrella Academy season 3 will likely tackle issues of identity for Ben, who doesn’t remember the original family, and explore his place among a new set of siblings. It’s almost certain that the Sparrows will have their own problems, but Sir Reginald almost definitely avoided some of the pitfalls of his first attempt at a superteam. It will be interesting to see how those relationships develop anew, especially considering Pogo might be different this time around.
The daddy issues experienced by Luther and Diego in particular will undoubtedly be in full force in The Umbrella Academy season 3, especially since Hargreeves remembers the original group from their time in the 1960s, perhaps in an even more disdainful light than when he raised them. Of particular note is the presumed absence of a robot “Mom” resulting from the departure of Grace from Reggie’s life, which may have hardened his already thick emotional shell. Much of the conflict in the next run will likely be between this new Hargreeves and his former charges.
There’s even a possibility that Sir Reginald’s mysterious project on the dark side of the moon mentioned in The Umbrella Academy season 2 will be expanded upon in season 3, or maybe it will be shown to be related to the 43 children who were born on October 1, 1989. However, that date may also have shifted due to the younger appearance of the Sparrows in 2019, including Ben. This would fit with the idea that Hargreeves was more cautious with his experiment (assuming he is the cause of the spontaneous births) this time around.
The Umbrella Academy season 2 introduced us to Lila, another of the 43 powered children, and it’s therefore possible that a season 3 could bring in others of that number. Likewise, the fact that Harlan inherited some mojo from Vanya in 1963 could be instrumental either in introducing a new villain or at least in showing us a grown version of the troubled boy. It doesn’t seem like the show would introduce Harlan’s telekinesis or Lila’s mimicry without the intention of exploring those abilities further.
Because the appearance of the Sparrows also occurred at the end of the most recent volume of the comics series, there’s not yet any inspiration from the source material upon which to draw, meaning that the adaptation could diverge even further from the print story than it already has. On the other hand, there’s an implied connection between “Mom” and the new team in the graphic novel that the TV series might take advantage of given a divide or possible reconciliation between Grace and Reggie, and the presence of the floating cube in both finales portends possible parallels as well.
Whatever might happen next, The Umbrella Academy season 3 can’t come soon enough, especially for those who mourned the loss of Ben (who technically was already dead) only to have him resurrected in different form. Whether the Commission or time travel even come into play at all, the solidifying sense of family between the previously estranged Hargreeves siblings is an encouraging sign that our favorite characters will band together for plenty of adventure to come.
