The Last Ship Season 5 Trailer, Release Date and More

TNT will bring out The Last Ship for a final season before its programming slate heads in a new direction.

The Last Ship Season 5 will be the show’s final voyage, according to TNT boss Kevin Reilly, who recently confirmed that the drama will end after the upcoming season.

The series, which stars Eric Dane (Grey’s Anatomy), Bridget Regan (Marvel’s Agent Carter) and Adam Baldwin (Firefly, Chuck), will pick things up in Season 5 in the aftermath of a global catastrophe that has wiped out most of the planet’s population. Consequently, the action series is coming to a killer coda.

This season, the world is finally recovering from the deadly virus that devastated the population, but global political unrest remains. Tom Chandler (Dane) has retired and his former crew has scattered, many having risen in the ranks within the Navy. Sasha Cooper (Regan), Lieutenant Danny Green (Travis Van Winkle), SBS WO-N Wolf Taylor (Bren Foster) and Sergeant Azima Kandie (Jodie Turner Smith) are on a covert mission in Panama. When they are wrongly blamed for an attack on the Panamanian president, the consequences for the United States are dire. The Nathan James must fight to prevent invasion by Latin America — and the next world war. Season five is The Last Ship at its most epic, upping the ante on action and excitement, but at its core, it underscores the costs of prolonged war and the toll it takes on the heroes who fight it.

The cancellation comes as TNT heads in a new programming direction. At its upfront presentation in New York, the network made suspense drama and sci-fi a major focus, including Ridley Scott’s new sci-fi block. Younger and female skewing shows, Animal Kingdom and Claws, were front and center, while The Last Ship was noticeably absent, despite being TNT’s third most-watched show.

TNT, despite its cancellation of the series, lauds its success, citing Season 4 as “one of the summer’s top five cable dramas among total viewers,” reaching a total of 24 million viewers on TNT’s linear, VOD and digital platforms.

The Last Ship is loosely based on the 1988 novel by William Brinkley and was adapted to television by creators Hank Steinberg and Steven L. Kane.
