Jensen Ackles and Jared Padalecki explain what to expect from the return of Castiel on Supernatural.

In Supernatural “Advanced Thanatology,” a return from Castiel was just the thing Dean needed as the older Winchester brother reached a spiritual slump. Jensen Ackles and Jared Padalecki spoke to reporters during a set visit about what it means for the rest of the season.

“At the end of last season and the beginning of this season we do see that Dean has just like given up, so to speak,” Jensen Ackles explained to a group of reporters on the Supernatural set. “So the return of Cass has ignited that fire again. He’s got some hope and motivation to dig a little deeper and see what we can figure out. Because if he was written off and Mom was written off, maybe there’s a few other people that shouldn’t have been written off. And we figure that out as the series continues to move on.”

Castiel’s return won’t be without its complications, as the Winchesters disagree over the importance of discovering just how Cass came back.

“Dean’s a little less questioning and more accepting of ‘I don’t care how it happened, we got our buddy back’,” Ackles said.

Sam, however, sees things a little more critically. It’s somewhat of a role reversal from their feelings towards Jack. With Jack, Dean’s criticising and untrusting, while Sam is more accepting. It appears they take the opposite stance when it comes to Castiel’s miraculous re-emergence. Jared described it as Sam being the chef, while Dean is the consumer.

“Where Dean eats the pizza, Sam’s like ‘What kind of cheese is that?'” Jared Padalecki said. “So I think Sam is really looking to find out what happened… Also, not just because of Sam’s intellectual curiosity, but Sam still wants Mom back and, heck, if we can start calling out who we want back, I’m sure there are a lot of people Sam wouldn’t mind to bring back.”

Since Dean is so relieved to have Cass back, Dean would be less willing to question it and more ready to enjoy it. “Sam’s like ‘Okay, it is great, I agree, but…the other shoe is probably going to drop.’ So what else can this person do?” Padalecki said.
