The crystal gems always save the day and now they’ll be doing it in the real way on consoles. That’s right, the fan favorite Steven Universe is becoming an RPG. Titled Steven Universe: Save The Light, developed by Grumpyface Studios, this game functions as a sequel to the Steven Universe mobile game, Attack The Light.
Thanks to the LA Times we’ve got a look at a new Gem named Hessonite and a description for her as well.
Hessonite is a pompous Homeworld commander who makes her way to Earth in order to retrieve the lost Prism and transform it back into a powerful weapon. She is the director of the previously announced Squaridot who is also making her debut within the game. Emmy and Tony Award-winning actress Christine Baranski will be providing the voice for Hessonite in “Save the Light.”
You can watch a clip of Hessonite in action at the LA Times article here.
The game is set to be released to the PS4 on October 31st and XBOX on Novemeber 3rd.
Unlike the former game, Save The Light will feature a tighter connection to the show’s story. Speaking to The Verge, Grumpyface CEO and director teased, “[Show creator Rebecca Sugar] had a great vision for how this could fit in, and we’re so happy to be able to have our own little take on Steven Universe. You’re gonna find out a lot of extra little things about the show from the game, I think.”
The game will also include fusions, with Stevonnie teased and Opal along with Sardonyx shown at San Diego Comic-Con.
At SDCC we also saw a new character named “Squaridot.” She’s another Peridot that hasn’t made the same sort of emotional progress that the Peridot we’ve seen in the series as. This way, Rebecca Sugar pointed out, they get to revisit how Peridot used to be.
At one point you also get to play as Greg’s guitar.
Here’s the new trailer from San Diego Comic-Con!
We’ve got gameplay footage right here as well, which also features an interview with series creator Rebecca Sugar.
Sugar confirms the game will feature eight playable characters. Steven, Greg, Connie, Garnet, Amethyst, and Pearl are confirmed to be playable and Peridot was shown in the SDCC trailer. That leaves one other character to play as. Lapis would be a likely option but we’ll see.
In Attack The Light, Steven functioned as a cheerleader (of course he did) for Garnet, Amethyst, and Pearl, giving out power-ups, and items while the Gems took on the enemies.
As evidenced by Connie’s sword, we know this game will take place at least during season two of the series.
In the background of one of the shots we see Lars and Sadie outside the big donut and in the gameplay footage we see Sour Cream and Peede so maybe others will at least show up in cameos.
Series creator Rebecca Sugar contributed an original story for the game, which should excite hardcore fans of the television series.
