South Park’s 23rd season–one that featured its historic 300th episode–comes to a close with a little holiday cheer. Regardless of what happens to Santa in the season finale, South Park season 24 is already confirmed. In fact, creators Matt Stone and Trey Parker agreed to a deal earlier this year that will keep the show running through 2022.
The comedic duo told THR that the renewals continue to be easy decisions for them. “I don’t think we have ever had an ‘OK, let’s sit down and decide if we are going to keep going,'” Parker said. Stone added: “I am 48. Trey turns 50 this year. So I will say that I don’t think we will be doing this show when we’re 60.”
Stone and Parker have hinted at some projects outside of South Park in the pipeline, but right now it’s unclear if that will have any effect on the show’s production schedule. There’s no premiere date set for South Park season 24, but the previous seven seasons have released during the middle or end of September.
One major change for South Park that will occur in 2020 is the matter of the show’s streaming rights. HBO Max, which is set to launch in spring 2020, acquired the rights to the show’s 23 seasons plus an additional three seasons. Hulu is the current streaming rights holder.
