“Growing up is terrifying,” we hear in the Sierra Burgess Is A Loser trailer. To amplify the menace, Netflix’s upcoming teen rom-com adds mistaken identity to teen angst, and hints towards a coming-of-age fim. Sierra Burgess Is a Loser stars Shannon Purser, from Stranger Things and Riverdale, as a high school band geek in love with a popular jock, played by Noah Centineo. The film was written by Lindsey Beer and directed by Ian Samuels.
Sierra Burgess Is a Loser is a modern-day retelling of Edmond Rostand’s 1897 book Cyrano de Bergerac with a catfish twist and time delayed Skype calls. It isn’t the popular high school beauty Veronica, played by Kristine Froseth, who needs the beautiful words to win love. It’s the girl with the body issues who wants to win over her crush. According to the official synopsis, Sierra is “an intelligent teen who does not fall into the shallow definition of high school pretty.”
The trailer shows a film with a little more depth than the usual teen drama, as the trio of teens find themselves even as they search for each other.
Sierra Burgess Is a Loser also stars RJ Cyler, Noah Centineo, Chrissy Metz and Lea Thompson.
