Netflix is not letting itself fall off the wagon with Santa Clarita Diet. The horror-comedy series, unveiled in early 2017 with a series of conceptual promos, may have arrived as a bizarrely random genre amalgam of irreverent comedies with the ubiquitous trope of zombies, but it has managed to make an impression with streaming audiences to justify a second helping.
Santa Clarita Diet Season 2 Review
There are rare occasions where the sequel is stronger than the original movie, but there’s usually a diminishing return the more you see zombies. The Santa Clarita Diet Season 2 trailer is here!
Drew Barrymore’s ravenously undead Sheila may start the clip ignominiously chained in basement, lest she get a hold of the people in the world she hasn’t killed (“literally everyone in the world – except three people”). However, the thus-far unsuccessful, crimson-spilling suppression of the Hammond family’s zombified secret gets renewed vigor, thanks to a desire to find a cure for the virus and a rosy montage with a little bit of Hootie. – Plus, we’re treated to the zombified, nevertheless polite, disembodied head of Nathan Fillion’s Gary.
…And here’s Netflix’s Santa Clarita Diet Season 2 announcement from last year, heralding the renewal with – what else? – a quirky promo video.
Santa Clarita Diet Season 2 Release Date
The series returns to Netflix on Friday, March 23rd.
Santa Clarita Diet debuted its 10-episode inaugural season on February 3, 2017 showcasing a gory (arguably allegorical) ordeal of real estate agent couple Sheila (Drew Barrymore) and Joel (Timothy Olyphant) whose lives are upended when Sheila becomes a human-flesh-craving zombie (though they prefer to avoid the phrase). Set against the sunny, sanguine backdrop of suburbia, Sheila’s energetic undead rebirth – boosted by macabre protein shakes – forces the family (including their teen daughter,) to make some decidedly dubious moral reasoning for the ghastly fate they deliver to the human victims who satiate her cravings.
While Netflix don’t exactly divulge hard numbers reflecting the performance of its content, Santa Clarita Diet has generally impressed audiences, reflecting a well-rounded dynamic between the show’s extremely gory, blood-soaked scenes and its levity-lifted cast chemistry, focusing on the comedic aspects of the mundane in suburbia, creating something with an intriguing contrast. Santa Clarita Diet is the brainchild of creator Victor Fresco, known from television shows such as My Name is Earl, Better Off Ted, Andy Richter Controls the Universe and Mad About You.
Santa Clarita Diet Season 2 Cast
Netflix announced the guest stars for the new season; Joel McHale and Maggie Lawson guest star as Chris and Christa, married realtors in Santa Clarita — and a more successful, more aggressive version of Sheila and Joel. Gerald McRaney guest stars as Ed Thune, a retired army colonel who Joel finds very intimidating. Zachary Knighton guest stars as Paul, the chill descendent of Serbian ancestors who has been tasked with pursuing the truth of the undead, no matter who or what stands in his way.
