The project is a reimagining of the science fiction teen drama about aliens living in the famous New Mexico town that ran from 1999-2002 on The WB and then UPN.

Fifteen years later, The CW has brought Roswell back, reimagining the series based on the Roswell High book series by Melinda Metz, with The Originals writer Carina Adly MacKenzie writing and executive producing. Roswell, New Mexico plays up the immigration undertones that were mostly left unexplored in the TV show.

Roswell, New Mexico Details

Here’s the Roswell, New Mexico preview poster:

The Roswell reboot took an important step forward to ensuring us that this is all real by casting its lead character. Jeanine Mason, best known as Dr. Sam Bello on ABC’s eternal Grey’s Anatomy, will portray Liz Ortecho for the rebooted Roswell, New Mexico. Ortecho will play an important role in the show’s new investment in immigration as a main theme. Deadline describes the role thusly:

Reluctantly returning to her tourist-trap hometown of Roswell, New Mexico, Liz Ortecho (Mason), a jaded biomedical researcher and the daughter of undocumented immigrants, is haunted by a tragic incident.  She discovers a shocking truth about her teenage crush who is now a police officer: He’s an alien who has kept his unearthly abilities hidden his entire life. She protects his secret as the two reconnect and begin to investigate his origins, but when a violent attack and long-standing government cover-up point to a greater alien presence on Earth, the politics of fear and hatred threaten to expose him and destroy their deepening romance.

Mason’s is of Cuban descent and she began her career as a dancer, notably winning season 5 of Fox’s So You Think You Can Dance

The Roswell reboot has filled out its series regular cast with Nathan Parsons (True Blood), Lily Cowles (BrainDead), Michael Vlamis (New Girl), Tyler Blackburn (Pretty Little Liars), and Heather Hemmens (If Loving You Is Wrong).

According to Deadline, Parsons will play the Max character, “a natural born leader and dedicated Roswell police officer who has kept a secret for years, concealing his origin and unearthly abilities.” Cowles will portray Isobel, “polished and restrained, Isobel wasn’t meant for small-town life, but she lives it with all the grace and enthusiasm she can muster in order to keep her true origins a secret.” Vlamis has been cast as Michael, “troubled but brilliant, he survived a violent childhood and now is secretly driven to find a way to escape Earth and the humans who have failed him, to return to a mysterious home he’s never known.”

As for Blackburn, he has been cast as Sgt. Alex Manes, recently returned home from the Middle East. Deadline teases: “After experiencing his fair share of psychological and physical trauma, Alex aims to adhere to his father’s expectations, abandoning his dreams and the possibility of a future with the man he loves.” Finally, Hemmens has been cast as Maria, “Liz’s fun, free-spirited former best friend and social media maven who is oblivious to the realities of Roswell.”
