Maya Erskine and Anna Konkle are going to be stuck in middle school a little bit longer.
Hulu, at its 2019 summer upfronts presentation, announced that it has renewed freshman comedy Pen15 for Season 2. The season will contain 14 episodes and there is no word on a release date yet. Pen15 Season 2 will continue to follow Maya and Anna’s traumatic middle school years, as all middle school years are.
Erskine and Konkle created and produce the show alongside Sam Zvibleman. The duo also stars in the show, playing themselves…in middle school. Erskine is Maya Ishii-Peters and Konkle is Anna Kone, two 13-year-old best friends who are outcasts in middle school. Pen15 Season 1 sought to present middle school at the turn of the millennium as it really exists: painfully awkward. The fact that its two lead characters just happen to be adults only adds to hte bizarre cacophony of hormones that is middle school.
Debbie Liebling will serve as executive producer alongside Marc Provissiero and Brooke Pobjoy from Odenkirk Provissiero Entertainment. Andy Samberg, Jorma Taccone, and Akiva Schaffer of The Lonely Island and Becky Sloviter of Party Over Here also produce.
As is often the case with original streaming shows, there is no reliable viewership data to gauge the Pen15‘s success. Hulu is clearly pleased with its comedy’s performance, however, pointing to its Top 25 of 2019 Metacritic rating. At the same upfront presentation, Hulu also renewed another freshman comedy, Ramy, for season 2. Hulu had already renwed Shrill for season 2 well in advance of the upfronts.
For now though, rest assured that the Pen15 Club is alive and welll and getting a Season 2.
