“As the size of our programming slate continues to grow, it makes sense for Showtime to offer another night of premieres — allowing us the opportunity to eventize series like Patrick Melrose,” Showtime president David Nevins said. “Offering original content on Saturdays not only enables us to fully service our subscribers with diverse offerings, it gives viewers enough time to enjoy them all. And a series with the ambition and quality of Patrick Melrose is the perfect place to start.”

Patrick Melrose was written by One Day‘s David Nicholls as adapted from the Edward St. Aubyn novels. The series will be set in the south of France in the 1960s, New York in the 1980s, and the U.K. in the early naughts, with each episode covering a different St. Aubyn novel.

In addition to Cumberbatch, Patrick Melrose stars Jennifer Jason Leigh and Hugo Weaving as his parents, Anna Madeley as his wife, Blythe Danner as Aunt Nancy, and Allison Williams as an acquaintance.
