Masters of the Universe Reboot from Kevin Smith Ordered at Netflix

Kevin Smith will be spearheading a Masters of the Universe: Revelation anime series for Netflix.

Masters of the Universe Revelations

After bringing She-Ra and The Princesses of Power to the streaming world, Netflix will continue to delve the He-Man extended universe for gold.

Filmmaker Kevin Smith announced at Power-Con in Anaheim on Sunday that he will be bringing an animated Masters of the Universe series called Masters of the Universe: Revelation to Netflix.

Smith, a prolific tweeter and podcaster, has intimated over the past year that he had been working on a project surrounding a major IP. His tweet promoting he and Marc Bernardin’s podcast Fatman Beyond live podcast appearance at Power-Con now makes a bit more sense.

Smith will serve as executive producer and showrunner on Masters of the Universe: Revelation, which is set to expand upon the storylines from the original series and catch up with He-Man and friends from where their stories ended decades ago. The show is being described as a “limited series.”

“I’m Eternia-ly grateful to Mattel TV and Netflix for entrusting me with not only the secrets of Grayskull, but also their entire Universe,” Smith said. “In Revelation, we pick up right where the classic era left off to tell an epic tale of what may be the final battle between He-Man and Skeletor! Brought to life with the most metal character designs Powerhouse Animation can contain in the frame, this is the Masters of the Universe story you always wanted to see as a kid!”

“Masters of the Universe has been a cultural phenomenon for generations, inspiring fans to discover their own power within,” said Rob David, VP of Mattel TV and Co-Executive Producer of the series with Smith. “Fans of this franchise have been waiting for the continuation of these characters, and Kevin Smith, as a Masters superfan himself, is the perfect champion and partner to expand the canon through a dynamic animated series on Netflix.”

He-Man has inspired children — and the child inside of us all — for decades, with his feats of heroism and courage in the face of evil.  We can think of no better creator for this show than Kevin Smith, a superfan whose pen is as mighty as He-Man’s Power Sword!” added John Derderian, head of anime content for Netflix.

Powerhouse Animation (Castlevania) will handle animation on the series. Mattel Television will produce with Mattell TV VP Rob David serving as executive producer. Eric Carrasco (Supergirl), Tim Sheridan (Reign of the Supermen), Diya Mishra (Magic: the Gathering) and Marc Bernardin (Alphas) will make up the writers’ room.

Between this new project and She-Ra: Princesses of Power, an execution of a Masters of the Universe extended…uh, universe does not seem out of the question. This series is unrelated to the planned Masters of the Universe movie reboot. Despite a long, tortured production process, that film remains scheduled for a March 5, 2021 release date.
