Jim Carrey is back working in the medium on which he first gained acclaim (short-lived 1984 sitcom The Duck Factory notwithstanding,) with the new Showtime comedy series Kidding.
Kidding finds Carrey as Jeff, a.k.a. “Mr. Pickles,” a puppeteer and iconic megastar in the world of children’s television, who has spent several years gaining the adoration and trust of both children and their parents, reaping a multimillion dollar empire as the result. However, Jeff’s home life is hardly a jolly jar of pickles, with his wife, two sons, sister and father living together in a proverbial powder-keg. Consequently, the series will showcase a bittersweet kind of comedy, depicting a situation in which, per the description, “a kind man in a cruel world faces a slow leak of sanity.” – Thus, don’t expect any Fire Marshall Bill or Vera de Milo cameos here.
Kidding is the brainchild of Dave Holstein, a co-executive producer alongside Carrey on I’m Dying Up Here, also known for his work on subversive series such as The Brink, Raising Hope and Weeds. It features directorial work courtesy of Carrey’s Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind co-conspirator Michel Gondry. Holstein wrote the pilot and will serve as showrunner.
