A dream of spring, and dragons, has been keeping fans of “A Song of Ice and Fire” warm this winter. Indeed, the author of the fantasy series that inspired Game of Thrones, George R.R. Martin, has said he hopes to see his sixth book in the ASOIAF series, The Winds of Winter, out in 2017. But even if that doesn’t come to fruition, it appears that Martin has other work coming down the pipe.
As revealed in its official description on Amazon, Gardner Dozois’ upcoming anthology book, Book of Swords, will feature a short story or novella by Martin that is set in his massive literary world. As the logline says, “Fifteen original tales celebrating fantasy’s golden age of sword and sorcery, including a new story from George R. R. Martin set in the world of A Game of Thrones!”
While this reveals nothing of the nature of the tale, undoubtedly this is exciting news for fans who enjoy expanding their interest in Westeros just beyond the central story of fire and blood. Indeed, some fans even genuinely prefer the good-hearted adventures of “Tales of Dunk and Egg,” the series of novellas about a hedge knight and future Targaryen king while riding through the great lands of Westeros 90 years before Ned Stark ever went to Winterfell.
Additionally, Watchers on the Wall speculates that this story might actually be the long anticipated “Fire and Blood” work, which is to be a comprehensive history of the Targaryen family. With any luck we’ll get the new story of Book of Swords and The Winds of Winter within the next 11 months!
