Starz appears to be on pointe with its bold new direction in adapting series from previously untapped television mediums (at least in the modern sense). Cinematic subjects like Spartacus and his rebelling gladiators, Captain Flint and his rampaging pirate privateers, and now, of course, ballet.
Enter the first trailer for Flesh and Bone, a “dark and gritty series” that will unpack all the hardship, glory, as well as probably the kink, that apparently lies underneath the world of ballet. Indeed, acclaimed dancer Sarah Hay (Black Swan) has been cast in the lead role of a series that already includes internationally renowned dancers like Irina Dvorovenko, the former principal dancer of The American Ballet Theatre, and that company’s current soloist, Sascha Radetsky.
Created by an Emmy-winning Breaking Bad writer and executive producer, Moira Walley-Beckett, Flesh and Bone follows a young ballet dancer, Claire, who has a distinctly troubled past, as she joins a prestigious ballet company in New York.
The series also stars Ben Daniels (House of Cards) and 22 accomplished ballet dancers from the American Ballet Theatre in the effort to ensure authenticity.
Flessh and Bone premieres exclusively on Starz on Sunday, November 8, 2015.
