Fear the Walking Dead premieres its fifth season in June, arriving after the landscape of its mothership series, The Walking Dead, was significantly altered – not only because of the exits of main cast members, but a six-year time jump. Consequently, spinoff series Fear – which started as a prequel, and, at one point, jumped ahead – is now back to being a prequel. However, that is not to say that Fear won’t be bringing new concepts to the shared-universe series. Indeed, the showrunners are – with typical ambiguity – teasing a game-changer.
At a Fear the Walking Dead talk during a panel discussion at the AMC Networks Summit 2019 (where crucial details about an upcoming third series was confirmed), co-showrunner Ian Goldberg and the franchise overseer, chief content officer Scott M. Gimple, discussed some the more intriguing aspects of the show’s upcoming fifth season, specifically the plane in flight teased in the trailer; a head-turning concept this deep in the undead apocalypse, in which mechanical upkeep is unsustainable and fuel supplies are mostly spent. However, according to Goldberg’s explanation, the plane is not just a curiosity, it’s a harbinger of game-changing concepts.
As Goldberg explains:
“The plane is sort of emblematic of the lengths that our group will go to help people out in the world, but the plane’s also going to draw people to it. Some of them will be living (some will be walkers).” Goldberg adds, “There will be one walker in particular – I have to be careful saying this in front of Scott. Let’s just say that this walker will open a universe of possibilities for our story.”
Gimple didn’t touch the subject and Goldberg offered no further explanation about the nature of this mystery walker, but it certainly sounds as if its very existence will be seen as a major divergence from everything that we thought to be true in the The Walking Dead TV universe. – Color us intrigued,
Of course, there will be plenty of other sources of perilous undead apocalypse mischief to be had for Fear the Walking Dead’s current lineup of survivors in Morgan Jones (Lennie James), Alicia Clark (Alycia Debnam-Carey), Victor Strand (Colman Domingo), Althea (Maggie Grace), John Dorie (Garret Dillahunt), June (Jenna Elfman) and newly promoted regular Charlie (Alexa Nisenson). Fully embracing their new mission of helping people, our survivors will – thanks to the plane – encounter more hostile elements of the living, and even showcase the (re)return of the repeatedly presumed-dead Daniel Salazar (Rubén Blades).
Fear the Walking Dead Season 5 premieres on AMC on Sunday, June 2, 2019 at 9 p.m. ET.
