Doctor Who: “There’s always the chance” River Song will return

"There’s always the chance that River will show up again" says Doctor Who showrunner Steven Moffat...

By now, you’ve probably stopped taking River Song’s farewells as a final end. Alex Kingston’s Doctor Who character has had plenty of emotional send-offs, with the most recent one taking place during the 2015 Christmas special, The Husbands Of River Song.

In the latest instalment of Doctor Who Magazine (issue 509 – on shelves now!), a fan asked showrunner and River creator Steven Moffat this question: “Do you feel that River Song’s story is done?”

Here’s how The Moff responded…

“Well, yes, that does seem like the end to me. Except, of course, it isn’t, and can’t be. There’s always the chance that River will show up again, at some other point in her timeline, with a stolen camel, seven more husbands, and a nuclear submarine.

“Big Finish isn’t done with her, I believe, and any reason to get Alex Kingston back in action is a good one.

“But for me, I think, I’m done. Back when I thought I might be leaving at the end of 2015, I specifically planned the Darillium scene as my goodbye – bringing everything full circle, to the moment (in Forest of the Dead) just before I took over.”

So, what shall we take from this? It sounds like Mr Moffat may have penned his final River Song story, but the Big Finish audio team are far from finished with her. And there’s nothing stopping a future showrunner like Chris Chibnall working her back in, if they wanted.
