In what’s becoming a habit for the channel, FX officially greenlit a fourth season of Better Things for 2020 while the show’s currently-running third season is just approaching the middle of its run. Of course, it’s hardly a surprise, since the comedy series – which sees the inimitable Pamela Adlon serves as writer, executive producer, showrunner, director and star – happens to be a low-key, but nevertheless treasured jewel on the FX lineup. Adlon, a veteran actress/comedian is known from her array of voice acting roles, notably as Bobby Hill on King of the Hill, as well as her onscreen runs on Louie and Californication.
As John Landgraf, Chairman of FX Networks and FX Productions expresses in a statement:
“With every season, Better Things becomes more vital, engaging and revelatory, cementing Pamela Adlon’s status as one of the most accomplished creative forces in television today.” He adds, “Rarely has there been a show that is so personal and, at the same time, so thoroughly universal in the way it explores modern parenting, family and life. We are thrilled to extend the series for a fourth season and to continue this incredible partnership with Pamela, her creative team and the amazing cast of Better Things.”
Adlon chimes in on the renewal, stating:
“I am humbled, grateful and excited to tackle another season of stories and continue my creative partnership with my fearless FX team.”
Better Things centers on embattled, filter-less single mother Sam Fox (Pamela Adlon), who – perhaps mirroring the star’s own biography – is an L.A.-based working actress raising three daughters, Max (Mikey Madison), Frankie (Hannah Alligood) and Duke (Olivia Edward). Also saddled with the responsibility of caring for her diminishing English expat mother, who lives across the street, Phil (Celia Imrie), Sam’s daughters prove to be a constant handful in their own unique ways, which leaves little time to curate her on-life-support love life.
Amongst the accolades that Better Things has achieved are two consecutive Primetime Emmy nominations for the “Outstanding Lead Actress in a Comedy Series” category for Adlon in 2017 and 2018. It also earned her a Golden Globe nod in 2018 for “Best Performance by an Actress in a Television Series – Musical or Comedy.” Additionally, the series, in its first season (2016), was one of seven shows to be honored with a Peabody Award.
The series – the co-creation of Pamela Adlon and (the currently controversy-embroiled) Louis C.K. – debuted on September 8, 2016. The second season arrived on September 14, 2017, which would be followed by a longer turnover for the third season, which, having premiered on February 28, 2019, is still running.
Better Things currently airs on Thursdays at 10 p.m. ET/PT, headed toward a Season 3 finale on May 16th.
Better Things Season 4 Release Date
