Avatar: The Last Airbender – The Complete Series Coming

Forget about individual seasons, Avatar: The Last Airbender - The Complete Series is finally coming to DVD.

Avatar fans who have spent the last nine or so years sick of carting around three box sets of DVDs finally have a solution in sight. On October 6th, Nickelodeon will be releasing Avatar: The Last Airbender – The Complete Series on DVD.

For those who, for whatever insane reasons, are not familiar with this show, it is the epic tale of Aang, a 12-year-old boy who wakes up after a century of suspended animation, only to find he is the sole survivor of a genocide that annihilated his people, the Air Nomads. With the Fire Nation pressing down on the Water Tribes and the Earth Kingdom, it falls to Aang to stop them, because not only is he a bender – a person born with the ability to bend his nation’s element – but also the Avatar, the only person in the world with the ability to bend all four elements. However, Aang has only mastered airbending and must seek out masters to train him in the other bending arts if he is to take down the cruel, imperialist Fire Lord Ozai.

This show is smartly-written, beautifully animated awesome distilled into episodic form. At its worst, it’s better than 90% of what’s out there, and if you’re unfamiliar with it, this box set containing all 61 episodes, would be a perfect way to experience it, especially with the price going as low as $30. That’s a freaking steal for what you’re getting.

In addition to the episodes themselves, presented in full, there are tons of special features including episode commentaries, most of which are very good, providing deeper insight not only into the writing and production of the series but into background info on the characters and story that didn’t make it into the final version. There are also featurettes, animatics, interviews, and more. You’d definitely be getting your money’s worth.

Outside of economizing shelf space and indulging one’s own completionism, however, there doesn’t seem to be a whole lot of incentive for fans who already own the individual season box sets to pick this one up. There aren’t any additional discs or special features beyond those of the initial DVD releases listed, and as of yet, there is no mention of a Blu-Ray release. Still, for $30 or so bucks, it’s an exceptional value. This series box set makes for prime gift material.

Here’s the complete list of special features…
