The actors and actresses who made Freak and Geeks a cult hit have long since moved on from their days at William McKinley High School, and like most high school students, they’ve moved on to bigger and better things.
But that hasn’t stopped the recurring question of whether or not a reunion between the freaks and the geeks is in the works. It’s a constant link that has tied this esteemed group together since the show was cancelled in 2000.
It now appears that at least one half of the show is intent on returning to the glory days. John Francis Daly, who portrayed geek leader Sam Weir, is in the process of writing the new installment in the National Lampoon’s Vacation franchise and he’s bringing along two familiar faces for a mini Freaks and Geeks reunion.
In an interview with Vulture, Daly mentioned he’d be making a cameo in the new film, as will Samm Levine and Martin Starr. So Sam Weir, Neal Schweiber (Levine) and Bill Haverchuck (Starr) will be together again, though presumably not in character.
Levine’s recently returned to TV, co-starring in ABC’s new sitcom, Selfie. Starr was a huge presence on HBO’s breakout comedy of 2014, Silicon Valley.
As for the freaks, lead actress Linda Cardellini has kept busy, most recently appearing on Mad Men and New Girl, while her on-screen frenemy, Busy Phillips went from high school bad girl to a serial dater on Cougar Town. James Franco and Seth Rogan have mini Freaks and Geeks reunions all the time, the next will be on Christmas day when their new film, The Interview, hits theaters.
Daly, who is also directing the film, went on to say that the complete casting has not yet been confirmed, but the reunion is looking likely. What we do know for sure is that Chevy Chase and Beverly D’Angelo will return to reprise their original roles and Christina Applegate, Charlie Day and Chris Hemsworth are coming along for the ride.
