Warner Bros. and DC announced the somewhat surprising 2019 release of Wonder Woman: Bloodlines.
There aren’t many details available about Bloodlines at this time, but this animated film will be released as part of the DC Universe Movies series. Given that there isn’t an infamous Woman Wonder comic story that shares that name, it’s perfectly possible that this will be an original story. However, there’s also a chance that it will at least partially based on some existing story.
However, the real story here is that this movie exists at all. First off, DC has already announced three animated films set to be released in 2019 (Batman: Hush, Reign of the Superman, and Justice League vs. The Fatal Five), and they don’t typically release more than three such movies in a year. Some are referring to the film as something of a bonus, but there’s also the chance that this movie will play a role in the Warner Bros.’ animated universe.
The other reason this announcement is so shocking is that many believed that DC may be wary of releasing another animated Wonder Woman film after the 2009 animated Wonder Woman movie experienced some sales struggles. In 2010, Bruce Timm suggested that some people were wary of pursuing projects featuring female superheroes.
“The execs decided because it wasn’t able to sell quickly right away, where as Justice League [Frontier] was, that there wouldn’t be any more female superhero films right now,” said Timm. “We were developing, and hoping to get started, on a Batgirl film based on ‘Year One,’ but because of Wonder Woman’s slow sales start, that won’t be happening now.”
Of course, the overwhelming success of the live-action Wonder Woman film probably helped change some people’s minds regarding the scope of the character’s appeal.
