As Christmas afterglow resonates, the world prepares to wave goodbye to a moviegoing decade dominated at the box office by comic book movies, its adjacent genres and the Disney-driven return of Star Wars. Thus, Fandango’s 2020 Most Anticipated Movies survey is looking ahead toward the launch of a ‘20s decade that, based on what we’re seeing, will be roaring in its own right with a scintillating slate of initial releases.

The ticket seller site polled more than 2,000 millennial film fans during the last weeks of December, yielding a series of results that, while not stupendously surprising, paints an intriguing picture when it comes to the trajectory of the aforementioned genres of movies.

Wonder Woman 1984 is the clear winner of this annual filmgoer survey, topping the “Most Anticipated Movie” category, with stars Gal Gadot, Chris Pine and Kristen Wiig coming out on top respectively in the “Most Anticipated Actress,” “Actor” and “Villain” categories. Indeed, if the survey is any indication, then director Patti Jenkins’s follow-up to her 2017 smash hit – a breakthrough for female directors, female action stars and, for what it’s worth, the generally rudderless DC Extended Universe films – is proving to be a bellwether moment, with the top 4 of the “Most Anticipated Movie” category dominated for the first time ever by female-directed/female-headlined films, with DC/Warner’s Wonder Woman sequel trailed by two Marvel efforts in director Cate Shortland’s Scarlett Johansson-headlined Black Widow solo film and director Chloé Zhao’s Angelina Jolie-led ensemble offering, Eternals, followed by Disney’s live-action adaptation of Mulan, directed by Niki Caro.

On another note, those who lament the current state of comedy movies (decreasing in releases, suffering from box office anemia,) will probably not be uplifted by the “Most Anticipated Live-Action Comedy” results, since 4 out of the top 5 entries – exciting as they may be – are sequels to classic franchises, with Ghostbusters: Afterlife followed by ‘80s/’90s revivals Bill & Ted Face the Music and Bad Boys 4 Life, with director Michael Showalter’s crime comedy, The Lovebirds being the only original offering in the top 5.
