Lilly Wachowski turned up at the Television Critics Association press tour last week to promote her new TV series Work in Progress, which will debut on Showtime at Christmas, and it seemed like the perfect opportunity to set the record straight about her involvement in Warner Bros’ potential rebooting of The Matrix.
Rumours of the Wachowskis’ being attached to a new film in the franchise had been building behind comments by former Matrix stunt coordinator and John Wick director Chad Stahelski, who had at one point said he was “super happy that the Wachowskis are not just doing a Matrix, but they’re expanding what we all loved” before later saying he’d been quoted out of context.
Discussing Film then claimed that the Wachowskis were indeed in charge of a new Matrix project for WB, and that the film was in pre-production under the working title of “Project Ice Cream.” The site went on to say that the movie would start shooting in the early months of 2020 in Chicago, and that original Matrix art director Hugh Bateup was also onboard.
This now appears to be a whole lot of nonsense. Lilly responded to a question from Slashfilm at TCA about any upcoming Matrix reboot by referencing her current job on Work in Progress, saying “Well, I’m a little busy at the moment.”
Any further Matrix outings do appear to have her blessing, however:
“I like it when stories go out into the world and then come back to you in different ways. I mean, that’s what storytelling is all about. I’m part of a bigger thing. I don’t have any ownership over stuff like that, so whatever story anybody wants to tell, I can’t wait to hear. I hope it’s better than the original.”
Whether Warner Bros. will indeed start moving on a Matrix reboot either this year or next remains to be seen.
