The Space Between Us is a strange sort of movie. It’s a young adult romance that isn’t based on a novel. It’s a science fiction film that includes a partial Mars setting, but it is decidedly not interested in the same kind of audience as The Martianor other “harder” science fiction stories. It might fly under the radar, but it has an all-star cast that includes Gary Oldman, Asa Butterfield (Ender’s Game, Miss Peregrine), and Britt Robertson (Tomorrowland, The Secret Circle). In other words, we’re intrigued…
We just got the third and final trailer for the flick that stars Butterfield as Gardner Elliot, a fragile boy living on Mars who manages to redefine the concept of a long distance relationship by wooing (via transmission) a young girl on Earth played by Britt Robertson. Check it out…
And here’s everything else we know about The Space Between Us…
The Space Between Us Trailers
While the first trailer focused on the Space Between Usstory from the perspective of Gardner, the latest trailer tells us more about where Robertson’s Tulsa is coming from. A foster kid who is sick of people lying to her, Tulsa initially doesn’t believe Gardner’s story of his life on Mars. However, as the story progresses and Gardner struggles to survive in Earth’s atmosphere, Gardner’s unique lifestory becomes evident.
The new trailer also reveals some more details about plot. For example, the road trip Tulsa and Gardner go on isn’t just a joyride, but rather a search for Gardner’s father, whom Gardner has never met (not even via space Skype). With a great cast — including two talented young leads — and a carefully-crafted narrative, Space Between Uslooks like it could be something special…
The previous trailer for The Space Between Us gives us the story from the perspective of Butterfield’s Gardner. Set in an apparent near future, it begins with an epic, inspirational speech from an always-game Gary Oldman playing a visionary figure with plans to launch six young astronauts into space to become the first colonists of Mars. However, a post-launch pregnancy amongst the group puts a damper on the potential for the mission with extraterrestrial conditions claiming the life of the mother and giving birth to an extraterrestrial-born baby who will likely suffer from brittle bones and a weak heart due to the non-Earth gravity levels of Mars.
Flash-forward to 16 years later and baby Gardner is shown as a spry adolescent who, due to both natural hormonal tendencies and being a proverbial boy in a plastic bubble his entire life, has become restless with his insular existence. However, when potential romance blooms via Space-Skype with Britt Robertson’s “Tulsa,” his Red Planet cabin fever cannot be contained. Consequently, despite reservations over implications for his health, he finally gets the greenlight to be sent home to meet his family and his enamored acquaintance. From there, we see a radical shift in tone and the film seems to experience a movie metamorphosis, becoming a life-affirming teen road trip romance.

Shortly after landing, she dies from complications while giving birth to the first human born on the red planet – never revealing who the father is. Thus begins the extraordinary life of Gardner Elliot – an inquisitive, highly intelligent boy who reaches the age of 16 having only met 14 people in his very unconventional upbringing.
While searching for clues about his father, and the home planet he’s never known, Gardner begins an online friendship with a street smart girl in Colorado named Tulsa. When he finally gets a chance to go to Earth, he’s eager to experience all of the wonders he could only read about on Mars – from the most simple to the extraordinary. But once his explorations begin, scientists discover that Gardner’s organs can’t withstand Earth’s atmosphere.
Eager to find his father, Gardner escapes the team of scientists and joins with Tulsa on a race against time to unravel the mysteries of how he came to be, and where he belongs in the universe.
