While the movie has yet to get either an official green light or release date, it was expected to begin shooting in March under the direction of John Francis Daley and Jonathan Goldstein (Game Night). But the script is still apparently being worked on, enough so that the studio does not feel it will be ready in time for cameras to roll even six months from now.
At the same time, star Ezra Miller is also slated to appear in the third Fantastic Beasts movie, for which shooting is expected to begin in July. With that presenting a potential scheduling conflict, The Flash (which is what we’ll call it for now) will tentatively start production in late 2019 for release sometime in 2021.
The Flash (which at one point was set to be an adaptation of the comic book storyline Flashpoint, but that is apparently no longer the case) has been on the drawing board ever since the DC film universe officially came into being in 2013 with Man of Steel. Writer/director Seth Grahame Smith (Pride and Prejudice and Zombies) and director Rick Famuyiwa (Dope) both logged time developing the movie, with the latter’s departure in 2016 due to creative differences putting the speedy superhero in the slow lane for a year.
At the same time, the box office disappointment of last year’s Justice League forced Warner Bros. to start restructuring the plans for its roster of DC heroes. Of all that film’s stars, only Gal Gadot as Wonder Woman is confirmed to return in next year’s Wonder Woman 1984, while Ben Affleck (Batman), Henry Cavill (Superman) and Ray Fisher (Cyborg) may have all suited up for the last time.
The studio does have Aquaman coming out in December, while Shazam! and Wonder Woman 1984 are due out next year. A Joker movie starring Joaquin Phoenix is in production now, while Birds of Prey is scheduled for 2020, and Suicide Squad 2 is still in the works.
Miller first cameoed as Barry Allen/The Flash in Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice and Suicide Squad before having a featured role in Justice League. The full schedule of upcoming DC superhero movies can be found here.
