The Favourite stars Emma Stone, Rachel Weisz, and The Night Manager‘s Olivia Colman, three of the best actresses currently in the acting game. It also stars Sherlock‘s Mark Gatiss, Joe Alwyn, and Fury Road‘s Nicholas Hoult. The Favourite is being directed by Yorgos Lanthimos, the Greek filmmaker behind absurdist dark comedy The Lobster. (It also has American Honey cinematographer Robbie Ryan as its director of photography.) If you haven’t seen The Lobster, go find it and watch it now.
The Favourite Trailer
We’ve got our first proper look at The Favourite with the release of a characteristically absurdist and beautiful trailer from Lanthimos. Check it out…
The Lobster is a divisive film — as weird, demanding, and awkward as it is funny, briliiantly-acted, and incredibly insightful. You’ll probably have a strong reaction to it. Our film reviewer David Crow found it a little too dark to be completely successful in its ambitions. However you may feel about it, its unique and specific vision marked Lanthimos as a director to watch.
The Favourite Cast
So what is The Favourite about? According to Fox Searchlight Pictures, the film is “a bawdy, acerbic tale of royal intrigue, passion, envy, and betrayal.” It is set in the court of Queen Anne in early 18th century England. Colman stars as Queen Anne, Weisz as her adviser and lover Sarah Churchilll, and Stone as Churchill’s younger cousin Abigail, who throws the relationship between Anne and Sarah upside-down.
Here’s the full, official synopsis:
Early 18th century. England is at war with the French. Nevertheless, duck racing and pineapple eating are thriving. A frail Queen Anne (Olivia Colman) occupies the throne and her close friend Lady Sarah (Rachel Weisz) governs the country in her stead while tending to Anne’s ill health and mercurial temper. When a new servant Abigail (Emma Stone) arrives, her charm endears her to Sarah. Sarah takes Abigail under her wing and Abigail sees a chance at a return to her aristocratic roots. As the politics of war become quite time consuming for Sarah, Abigail steps into the breach to fill in as the Queen’s companion. Their burgeoning friendship gives her a chance to fulfil her ambitions and she will not let woman, man, politics or rabbit stand in her way.
The Favourite is based on a screenplay written by Deborah Davis and Tony McNamara and promises to “be a period film like no other,” according to producers Ceci Dempsey and Ed Guiney. We’re inclined to tentatively agree.
The Favourite Release Date
