The Edge of Seventeen was one of the most delightful movies of 2016, so it’s good to hear that we will be getting more of the world in a YouTube spin-off.
The Hollywood Reporter just announced that the streaming platform’s subscription service is launching a new series inspired by the Hailee Steinfeld coming-of-age dramedy. The Edge of Seventeen YouTube Red spin-off will have a new cast, but Kelly Fremon Craig, who wrote, directed and produced the movie, will act as an executive producer on the series.
At the moment, The Edge of Seventeen series has a pilot-production commitment. Annabel Oakes (Transparent, Atypical) is working on the pilot script, which will follow a high school student and her best friend as they go through the ups and downs of life as a teenage girl. YouTube voices “subvert[ing] standard teen show tropes” as a goal of the series.
For those who missed The Edge of Seventeen flick, it stars Steinfeld as Nadine Franklin, a high school junior who lives in the Portland suburbs. When her popular older brother starts dating her best friend, Nadine struggles with feelings of loneliness. Kyra Sedwick stars as Nadine’s mother, with Woody Harrelson turning in a memorable performance as Nadine’s teacher confidante.
“Kelly Fremon Craig created an honest, hilarious and heartbreaking film with The Edge of Seventeen,” said YouTube head of comedy Dustin Davis in a statement. “It went beyond most teen movies, and was able to captivate an audience beyond those in high school. We’re excited to work with the entire team at STXtv and have Annabel and Kelly create a series for YouTube Red using themes from the film as inspiration.”
