The Dark Crystal Returns to Theaters This February

It seems that 1982 was a year full of films that underperformed at the box office but were later considered to be contemporary classics: Blade Runner, The Thing, and, of course, The Dark Crystal. The latter of these was the most interesting at the time because it gave Muppet master Jim Henson a chance to really test the boundaries of his creativity. Unfortunately, people didn’t really know what to make of it at the time, and the film was quickly and unjustly maligned as being too intense for young children (a fallacy when compared to other perennial kids flicks like The Wizard of Oz and Bambi) or, even worse, too slow.

Fortunately, The Dark Crystal never really went away. It was a cable TV and video rental stalwart, and word of mouth during those pre-Internet days of the 1980s and ’90s was favorable enough that audiences began to see the film for what it truly was, an inventive, immersive fantasy tale full of originality.

It also was (and is) a technical marvel, with jaw-dropping animatronics and puppetry that all the CGI in the world can’t fully replicate. And while the proposed sequel never hit the big screen due to factors ranging from Henson’s 1990 death to the perils of development hell, the story of The Dark Crystal continued through comics, a recent line of action figures, and the upcoming Netflix prequel series The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance.

Those who missed the considerable pleasures of the flick in cinemas during the first go round will be estatic to know that a newly restored 4K version of the film will be playing on Sunday, February 25th and Wednesday, February 28th at 2pm and 7pm, courtesy of Fathom Events. Adding to the prestige nature of this limited screening will be a new introduction from The Jim Henson Company’s President and CEO Lisa Henson on the making of the film.
