The early successes of Sofia Coppola still provide the auteur with a lot of leeway. While we doubt anyone, including Bill Murray, has an inclination to watch A Very Murray Christmas again next December, the filmmaker who gave us The Virgin Suicides and Lost in Translation is always someone to keep an eye on. And in 2017, she will be releasing her first major film since 2013’s underrated The Bling Ring.
In The Beguiled, Coppola appears poised to offer us a subversive revision of the American Civil War movie with a focus on the young women most sheltered, yet still woefully affected by the cataclysmic conflict. The film is set near the end of the war where a Union officer (Colin Farrell) becomes the captive of an all-girls Confederate boarding school. When trapped with these Daughters of the Confederacy, he will use his seductive charm to con his way into the young ladies’ hearts and into freedom.
This is a remake of the 1971 film of the same name, which starred Clint Eastwood and was directed by his Dirty Harry collaborator, Don Siegel. Yet, we imagine Coppola could take a much more intriguing view than that of the two men of action with this kind of tale.

The Beguiled Release Date
The Beguiled will open in limited release on June 23, 2017 and will then go nationwide on June 30.
The Beguiled Cast
In the role of the Union soldier, which was originated by Clint Eastwood, we can expect Colin Farrell to continue his increasingly eclectic array of work. The Irish actor will be playing a soldier by the name of John McBurney against a talented cast of women.
Leading the school will be Nicole Kidman as Martha Farnsworth and frequent Coppola player Kirsten Dunst as Edwina Dabney. The picture will also star, as some of the students, Elle Fanning, Oona Laurence, and Angourie Rice, the latter of whom was a breakout in 2016’s The Nice Guys.
