As the shoot of the newly monikered The Amazing Spider-Man continues in the US, news has emerged of a new villain for the movie. We know thus far that Rhys Ifans is to play the main antagonist in the movie, but Irrfan Khan, of Slumdog Millionaire fame, has revealed that he, too, will be taking a villainous role in the film.
Khan was cast in The Amazing Spider-Man as Nels Van Adder, who in the comic books became a test subject for a strange chemical that ultimately turned him into the Proto-Goblin. But, given the path of superhero movies of late to put in place potential villains for later movies, there was never any guarantee that a transformation would take place (just ask Dylan Baker).
Khan, talking to NDTV, did reveal that it was a part in the show In Treatment that got him noticed, and also hinted that his part in the new Spider-Man film might be more significant than first appreciated. “The role got me some good reviews there and I think the industry there is aware of my work. Marc Webb had seen me and wanted to work with me and he approached me for this role. I play one of the villains in the movie. It is a pivotal role.”
We’d still be surprised to see Sony unleash the Proto-Goblin in The Amazing Spider-Man, as we’d hope lessons have been learned from the villain overload in Spider-Man 3. But don’t bet against the rebooted Spider-Man franchise using him further down the line…
