Terrence Malick’s career has been so amusingly idiosyncratic over the years that one imagines he’ll have to someday make an autobiographical film all about himself. In the meantime, however, the director who once only made three movies in 25 years is continuing to make up for lost time with his fifth movie in six years, Song to Song. And now we have a trailer to go along with its all-star cast, including Ryan Gosling, Rooney Mara, Michael Fassbender, and Natalie Portman.
In the below trailer, we are allowed a very Malick glimpse into the Austin music scene, complete with a wonderful use of Del Shannon’s vastly underrated early ‘60s oldie, “Runaway.” You even can hear Gosling trying to reappropriate the tune in his own… distinct vocal affectation.
Within the film, two entangled couples that include struggling songwriters Faye (Rooney Mara) and BV (Ryan Gosling), as well as music mogul Cook (Michael Fassbender) and the waitress whom he seduces (Natalie Portman), chase success through Austin—and betrayal via each other.
Song to Song is appropriately premiering at Austin’s SXSW Film Festival and will open in New York and Los Angeles on March 17.
