We all knew it was going to be an emotional Star Wars Celebration, but nothing could have prepared us for the beautiful tribute the Star Wars family paid to the late, inimitable, wonderful Carrie Fisher, who passed away late last year at the age of 60. George Lucas, Kathleen Kennedy, Mark Hamill, Harrison Ford, and many of the other Original Trilogy cast members (as well as Hayden Christensen) were in attendance at the 40 Years of Star Wars panel, where they reminisced about working on the original films as well as time spent with Fisher.
To close out the panel, Lucas and Kennedy both said a few emotional words about working with the actress before introducing Fisher’s daughter, Billie Lourd, who appeared in The Force Awakens in 2015 and will also have a role in The Last Jedi.
The panel closed out with a video of Fisher, both in her early Star Wars days and her return to the big screen for The Force Awakens. What is truly moving is the tribute’s focus on the actress’ one-of-a-kind sense of humor, that willingness to be light, to go head to head with George Lucas and anyone else, to be a Princess who didn’t fall under any tropes. Fisher was a leader and a hero. As Lucas said prior to the video, “She was the boss.” We very much miss her.
