Slender Man Movie Release Date, Trailer, Cast, and News

Slender Man will haunt your nightmares in August. Here's what we know about the movie...

The foremost example of Internet creepypasta, the Slender Man, is set for a bit of a pop culture surge. As HBO’s 2017 documentary, Beware the Slender Man, brought more exposure to the legend, the upcoming movie adaptation is looking to tap into deep dark fears that have already wrought tragic consequences in real life.

Sony Pictures and Screen Gems appointed Sylvain White as director. For White, it’s a critical and poetic selection, since he made his directorial breakthrough for Screen Gems with the 2007 bellwether Hip-Hop dance drama hit, Stomp the Yard. With Slender Man, White works off a script by David Birke, a horror-minded screenwriter of films such as 13 Sins and clown serial killer biopic Gacy, who recently took a dramatic plunge with 2016’s Elle, directed by Paul Verhoeven.

Slender Man Trailer

A new Slender Man trailer has arrived as the film’s August release looms closer.

You can watch the first Slender Man trailer below, which arrived back in January, showcasing a morbid montage of mutilations and monstrous encounters – the unholy union of a teen high school drama with a Nine Inch Nails video.

As one would reasonably expect, given the subject of this horror film, the terrifying incorporeal presence of the Slender Man has – true to his Internet origins – gone viral, except here he’s done so quite literally in the minds of four Massachusetts high-school girls, played by Joey King (Fargo), Annalise Basso (Captain Fantastic), Julia Goldani Telles (The Affair) and Jazz Sinclair (Paper Towns). The girls’ attempt to debunk the creepypasta creature results in the disappearance of one of them, presumed to be a Slender Man victim. Consequently, the remaining girls begin to experience nightmarish, dark inducements, seemingly at the behest of the creature.

Slender Man Details

The film is, of course, inspired by stories of the Slender Man, a tall, skinny, suited scourge sporting a smooth, white, hairless, featureless face, which originated on the Internet back in 2009. Manifesting through an array of frightening anecdotes and purportedly random pictures in which he is seen ominously lingering in the background, the Slender Man is often depicted appearing in the woods at night, utilizing supernatural abilities, instigating sickness in witnesses and is claimed to be connected to the disappearances of children. However, the line between folklore and reality tragically blurred in a 2014 incident in which two 12-year-old girls in Wisconsin murdered a classmate, stabbing her 19 times, claiming to mollify the irresistible influence of the Slender Man.

Consequently, Slender Man presents unique challenges for Sylvain White with so much genuine tragic baggage attached. White’s body of work mostly resides in the arena of television, having directed episodes of several notable shows such as EmpireScorpionSleepy Hollow and Hawaii Five-0. Besides the aforementioned Stomp the Yard, White was in the director’s chair for the 2010 film adaptation of the DC Comics/Vertigo comic book series, The Losers, which featured names such as Zoe Saldana, Jeffrey Dean Morgan, Idris Elba and a pre-Captain America (post-Fantastic Four,) Chris Evans.

Slender Man Release Date

Slender Man is set to ambush audiences at theaters on August 10, 2018.
