RoboCop 2 and 3 Deluxe Blu-ray Release Details Revealed

If anybody can make watching RoboCop 2 and RoboCop 3 sound like a good idea, it's the folks at Scream Factory.

Paul Verhoeven’s RoboCop is an undisputed masterpiece. Irwin Kershner’s RoboCop 2 less so, and Fred Dekker’s RoboCop 3 even less than that. Despite a surefire concept, the franchise never lived up to that initial installment for a variety of reasons, although both of those sequels do have their fans. Mostly, though, they’re a case of what might have been.

Which makes the prospect of Collector’s Editions Blu-ray releases for both RoboCop 2 and RoboCop 3 such an interesting prospect when it’s coming from physical media torchbearers, Scream Factory. Scream Factory doesn’t skimp on special features, and if they’re touting these as Collector’s Editions, they’re bound to be packed with things we haven’t seen before. Of course, the special features are currently being kept under wraps, but we’re assured they’ll be announced in February, a solid month before release.

RoboCop 2 boasted a screenplay by famed Batman and Daredevil writer/artist Frank Miller, although the version of the story that made it to the screen was drastically different from what he envisioned. It was even more different from the original pitch for the sequel by RoboCop’s creators, which was unrecognizable compared to this movie (but that’s a topic for a much longer article).

RoboCop 3, on the other hand, is a little trickier. Director Fred Dekker wanted a “broader” approach to Robo and his world this time out, and the film, among many other things, suffers from a PG-13 rating (compare this to the original, which had to have moments cut out of it to avoid a dreaded X rating…the unrated director’s cut is available and it’s amazing).
