There have been many a Robin Hood movie made by Hollywood, but now is the day and age of shared universes. At one point, the new Robin Hood movie was known as Robin Hood: Origins, but that has thankfully been changed to simply Robin Hood. At one point, this was supposed to set up a whole Sherwood Forest shared universe…it’s not clear if that’s the case anymore. Hopefully not.
The production of the film has been interesting with Joby Harold (Edge of Tomorrow, King Arthur: Legend of the Sword) writing the script on spec before lining up the chance to also produce the picture when it enticed Leonardo DiCaprio’s Appian Way. Now set to be distributed by Lionsgate, the movie has chugged along admirably, albeit with a delay in the start of production, because its star Egerton saw the Kingsman sequel fast-tracked to 2017. Robin Hood is directed by Otto Bathurst (Black Mirror, Peaky Blinders) with Taron Egerton as the lead, Jamie Foxx in a new take on the Little John character, Eve Hewson (Bridge of Spies) as Maid Marian, and Ben Mendelsohn (Rogue One) as the Sheriff of Nottingham. Also the newest big screen Friar Tuck will be comedian Tim Minchin.
The newest trailer really emphasizes the relationship between Robin Hood and Jamie Foxx’s Little John. In addition to Little John returning with Robin from the Holy Lands in this version, it would seem John trains Robin to become “the Hood” in a manner very reminiscent of the two Zorros in The Mask of Zorro from 1998.
