Based on the spy novel by Jason Matthews, Red Sparrow is an enticing espionage thriller that will reunite director Francis Lawrence (who helmed all of The Hunger Games sequels) with Jennifer Lawrence.
20th Century Fox just dropped the trailer for the upcoming spy thriller, which serendipitously went into production before tensions between the U.S. and Russia really began to heat up (or perhaps frost over?). The film is set in modern times, but evokes a Cold War paranoia while perhaps inadvertently giving the world the Black Widow movie that Marvel Studios just can’t seem to find the time to make.

Red Sparrow Story
Here is the official synopsis for the film.
Dominika Egorova is many things. A devoted daughter determined to protect her mother at all costs. A prima ballerina whose ferocity has pushed her body and mind to the absolute limit. A master of seductive and manipulative combat.
When she suffers a career-ending injury, Dominika and her mother are facing a bleak and uncertain future. That is why she finds herself manipulated into becoming the newest recruit for Sparrow School, a secret intelligence service that trains exceptional young people like her to use their bodies and minds as weapons. After enduring the perverse and sadistic training process, she emerges as the most dangerous Sparrow the program has ever produced. Dominika must now reconcile the person she was with the power she now commands, with her own life and everyone she cares about at risk, including an American CIA agent who tries to convince her he is the only person she can trust.
Red Sparrow Cast and Crew
Red Sparrow stars Jennifer Lawrence as Dominika, a dedicated prima ballerina who loses her career after she is pressured by her government to aid in an assassination. Afterward she is forced to become a “Sparrow,” which is a deadly assassin who uses sexuality and seduction as a primary tool. Her first target, however will be a CIA analyst named Nathaniel Nash, played by Joel Edgerton. And just as she gets close to him, he may try to bring her over to the modern West.
The film also stars Matthias Schoenaerts as Dominika’s superior, Vanya Egorov, Ciarán Hinds, Mary-Louise Parker, Charlotte Rampling, Joely Richardson, and Jeremy Irons. The movie again reunites Lawrence with Francis Lawrence (no relation), who directed her in the most successful of The Hunger Games films, The Hunger Games: Catching Fire, as well as its two Mockingjay sequels. Justin Haythe of Revolutionary Road and A Cure for Wellness fame wrote the screenplay.
