Power Rangers Movie Trailers

What more do you need to get hyped for this movie? We’ve got two trailers and we’ll start with the one that shows off pretty much everything fans want.

Oh, hell yes. Ranger action, zord footage, and lots of nice character moments to chew on. Also, Bryan Cranston as Zordon! If you want an in-depth discussion of this trailer, head over to our breakdown and analysis. Plus it has a ton of screenshots to check for clues to the plot. The first trailer is more of a teaser but it does give us more insight into the characters. Check it out.

Feeling that Breakfast Club vibe from the trailer? If you want an in-depth analysis of this trailer, check out this article here. Again, lots of screenshots.

Power Rangers Movie Story

If you couldn’t tell from the trailers, this movie is a total reboot of the franchise along the likes of other recent remakes including Transformers and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. All the classic elements are there but updated for a modern (and slightly more mature) audience. The film’s plot is as follows.

Saban’s Power Rangers follows five ordinary high school kids who must become something extraordinary when they learn that their small town of Angel Grove – and the world – is on the verge of being obliterated by an alien threat.  Chosen by destiny, our heroes quickly discover that they are the only ones who can save the planet. But to do so they will have to overcome their real-life issues and band together as the Power Rangers before it is too late.

An official graphic novel tie-in for the film is also available, titled Power Rangers: Aftershock. This story will take place directly after the film. Read more about that here.

How much will the film be tied into the Power Rangers past? When Roberto Orci was briefly attached to the project he commented“It’s got a continuity within the world. I can’t tell you what, but it does have a continuity.” Whether that means simply including the old characters or actually tieing it into the plot of the new TV series remains to be seen.

Power Rangers Movie Cast

The main cast of the film includes Dacre Montgomery (A Few Less Men) as Jason, RJ Cyler (Me and Earl and the Dying Girl) as Billy, Naomi Scott (The 33) as Kimberly, Becky G (Empire) as Trini, Ludi Lin (Monster Hunt) as Zack, Bryan Cranston (Breaking Bad) as Zordon, Bill Hader (Saturday Night Live) as Alpha 5, and Elizabeth Banks (Pitch PerfectThe Hunger Games franchise) as Rita Repulsa.

There has been much talk about the swapping of the original characters races, with four of the five Rangers changed. The director of the film stated,

From the very beginning, diversity was a very important part of the whole process. We switched all of the races around, but we made sure that the essence of each of those characters are who they were in the original show, and this really will be an origin story of those characters.

The film has also acknowledged this in its second trailer, with Zack declaring, “I’m black!” and Billy confusingly responing back, “No you’re not.”

As fans had expected, the Rangers are relative unknowns while the supporting cast is filled out with well known Hollywood stars. Bryan Cranston, who did monster voices for the original show, wasn’t sure if he wanted to sign on to the film until the director likened the movie to the reboot of Batman. Cranston promises the movie will be “grounded and real” and in an an interview with IGN, he described the movies take on this classic character.

He is a frustrated mentor of these kids. They’re not advancing as I’d hoped. Some of them are not taking this seriously, the responsibility that has been placed upon them or that they have been chosen for. And yet, you’re a mentor. It’s almost like being a coach. You want to break down the individuality of them so that they can grow as a team.

Want to see a high quality look at the Rangers suits? Well we’ve got you covered right here.

Production designer Andrew Menzies (G.I. Joe: Retaliation) spoke about the design of the costumes, which may hint at plot points in the film, “Ours is an alien costume that grows on them, that’s not man-made. You can’t win everyone over, but we are trying to appeal to a more mature audience and gain new fans.”

Again this confirms Zordon and Alpha are probably aliens. While this had been touched on in the original series it’s nice that we’re getting it right up front in the new movie. You may also notice a similarity between these suits and Rita’s outfit for the film.

The outfit bears little resemblence to the classic Rita outfit, lacking the distinctive headgear and cone boobs. Thankfully in the trailers we’ve seen she’s got a staff that resembles the one she had in the show and it looks to contain a Green Power Coin. Set up for Tommy in the future perhaps? Elizabeth Banks also confirmed to People that, “We wanted to giver her a backstory that connects her to the new Rangers.” That Power Coin certainly fits with that.

Power Rangers Movie Posters

We’ve got two new international posters that look pretty damn cool. They show off not only the Rangers and Zords but also Rita.

Check out these two American posters, which also give us some great looks at the suits and Zords.

Power Rangers Movie Production

The film is directed by Dean Israelite (Project Almanac) who spoke about how he got the job and the tone of the film in June 2015.

I read the script and was really surprised by it. (It’s a) really cool, contemporary, mature but still playful, buoyant and fun take on the material, and was updated in a really interesting way. I put a really big presentation together, because I needed to win the job. There were a lot of guys going out for it and saw the potential in it, so I put a really big presentation together and was lucky enough to get the job. (The tone of the film) needs to be completely playful. Like Project Almanac, I hope it’s going to feel very grounded at the same time.

The script was written by John Gatins (Kong: Skull IslandReal Steel) with story by Burk Sharpless, Matt Sazama, Michele Mulroney, and Kieran Mulroney.

Previous draft of the film had been written by Zack Stentz, Ashley Miller (X-Men: First ClassThor), and Max Landis (Chronicle).

Landis had spoken about his work on the film on his twitter, mentioning that his pitch was,” The Breakfast Club meets Independence Day”. The Breakfast Club vibe can certainly be felt in the trailers. When the movie was officially announced, Stentz and Miller were the ones being touted as the main writers.

Roberto Orci was originally attached as an executive producer to the project but bowed out in September 2014. Now the movie is being produced by Haim Saban, Brian Casentini, Wyck Godfrey, and Marty Bowen (The Twilight SagaThe Fault in Our StarsThe Maze Runner franchise) with Allison Shearmur (The Hunger Games franchiseRogue One: A Star Wars Story) and Brent O’Connor(Warcraft) as executive producers.

The film also has Brian Tyler (Avengers: Age of UltronFurious 7as the composer and the famed Weta Workshop (The Lord of the Ringswill be in charge of suit design and visual effects.

Power Rangers Movie Morpher

Revealed by RangerNation, an official Saban Brands news source for all things Power Rangers, the movie morpher contains the five main Rangers coins. They all match the original coins from the series, albeit it with slightly tweaked designs. The morpher itself is a big deapture. While it more or less has the same shape, the design is very different. It in fact resembles something closer to a Kamen Rider belt, another Japanese superhero series. As with all toy designs, you can only base so much off them before you see them in action during the movie.

This is all we’ve got for the movie so far, but keep checking back with Den of Geek for more news on the Power Rangers movie!
