Tom Holland is on top of the world right now, having wall-crawled up to the rarefied air of both critical acclaim and box office dominance as the new Spider-Man in Spider-Man: Homecoming. Consequently, one of the actor’s upcoming, lesser-heralded, indie roles in the medieval adventure movie Pilgrimage stands to capitalize on that momentum.
The Pilgrimage trailer showcases sprawling Irish landscapes filled with rich forests and awe-inspiring promontories in a story that takes place in 1209. The film sees Tom Holland star as Brother Diarmuid, a novice monk – a member of a small group of monastic pilgrims – who is tasked with transporting a sacred bejeweled holy relic to Rome, specifically the would-be site of the Vatican. The journey takes the group across an island that’s riddled with tribal warfare, notably with roving Gaelic warriors spread throughout the area. However, Diarmuid and company won’t be unaccompanied during these travails, joined by a stoic warrior manservant known (appropriately,) as “The Mute” played by Jon Bernthal (Netflix’s The Punisher, The Walking Dead).
The monk caravan also encounters some non-hostiles, notably Norman knight Raymond de Merville, played by Richard Armitage (Netflix’s Catlevania, The Hobbit Trilogy). Indeed, the Pilgrimage trailer reveals the film to be a wondrous cinematic journey, rife with occasional action; a mix that properly recalls Peter Jackson’s The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit films. – The Pilgrimage cast also consists of Stanley Weber (Britannia), John Lynch (The Fall), Hugh O’Conor (The Fall), Rúaidhrí Conroy (Hart’s War) and Lochlann O’Mearáin (Genius).
In the director’s chair for Pilgrimage is Brendan Muldowney (Love Eternal, Savage), who works off a script by Jamie Hannigan. The film is a project from Savage Productions, distributed by RLJ Entertainment in the U.S.
