Passengers: Jennifer Lawrence on the Backlash to the Film

Jennifer Lawrence on the Passengers controversy, and how she never saw it coming...

Spoilers lie ahead for Passengers

High hopes were had for last Christmas’s science fiction adventure, Passengers, that saw Jennifer Lawrence and Chris Pratt stranded on a space ship and developing a romance. The problem, though, was the sinister undertones to the film, given the actions of Pratt’s character in the movie. Without going into too much detail, his character’s decision to wake up Lawrence’s in the film led to accusations of creepiness at best, pretty much murder and a form of date rape at worst.

Lawrence has been chatting to Vogue about this backlash now, and as with her co-star in the film, she never really saw it coming.

“I’m disappointed in myself that I didn’t spot it,” she admitted. “I thought the script was beautiful – it was this tainted, complicated love story. It definitely wasn’t a failure. I’m not embarrassed by it by any means. There was just stuff that I wished I’d looked into deeper before jumping on.”

This echoes similar words from Pratt in recent months, too. A shame, because there’s a core of a really good movie in Passengers, that just feels like it got lost somewhere along the way.

Passengers is available on DVD, Blu-ray and Ultra HD 4K Blu-ray now.
