Thanks to a new report from The Hollywood Reporter, we now know who is going to play Sonya Blade and Kano in the Mortal Kombat reboot movie.
It seems that Jessica McNamee (The Meg, Battle of the Sexes, CHIPS) is currently in negotiations to play Sonya. While the 33-year-old McNamee has only started to receive larger roles over the last couple of years, she certainly looks the part and has showcased that she may have what it takes to play this iconic Mortal Kombat character.
Joining McNamee will be joined by Josh Lawson who has reportedly already closed his deal to play Kano in the upcoming film. Lawson’s filmography is a tad more obscure, but you may know him from Anchorman 2 or the TV series Superstore. Again, he certainly seems to look the part.
Perhaps most interesting of all, though, is the rumor that Lewis Tan (of Wu Assassins and Deadpool 2 fame) is in negotiations to play an unconfirmed lead character. There are a few characters on the roster he would be perfect for, but given that he’s seemingly set to play a leading role, out best guess at the moment is that he’ll end up playing Kung Lao.
Joining those three will be Ludi Lin in the role of Liu Kang and Joe Taslim who is stepping in as Sub-Zero. That still leaves quite a few potential characters from the original games without actors to play them, but we’re sure that the prospect of having to live up to that amazing Mortal Kombat movie from the ’90s is enough to scare off even the heaviest of Hollywood’s hitters.
Mortal Kombat is still set for a March 5, 2021 release date.
