Logan’s Run Reboot Gets New Writer and Director

The Logan's Run remake now has The Hunger Games' Peter Craig writing and Simon Kinberg directing.

So many people have tried to bring a new version of Logan’s Run to the screen. So many have given up. It looks more and more likely with each announcement, though. And now Variety reports that Simon Kinberg will direct, with Hunger Games writer Peter Craig writing the script. Kinberg is about to have his first directorial effort, X-Men: Dark Phoenix, arrive in theaters later this year, so perhaps he’ll get right back in the chair for the new Logan’s Run.

Speaking to Collider back in 2015 Kinberg had teased this version of Logan’s Run as “potentially is their Hunger Games kind of franchise that is about a younger audience for a younger audience with a big idea. And Logan’s Run, as you know, is the granddaddy of Maze Runner and Hunger Games and so many of these books and movies now.” Funny that he ended up with Peter Craig writing this, right?

In today’s dystopian franchise world (well, and our dystopian world period), the basic premise of Logan’s Run sounds like it would be right at home. It’s the future, and overpopulation means that once you turn thirty, you get…ummmm…put to sleep. It’s kind of like Hollywood in that respect. As you can imagine, some people don’t like this plan, and take off. You know, run.

The original Logan’s Run was directed by Michael Anderson and starred Michael York and Jenny Agutter, based on the novel by William F. Nolan. A gender-swapped version of the story might work pretty well, come to think of it, and that is apparently the current plan. That assumes that the new movie actually gets made this time, but it looks like they’re serious about it this time.
