Get Out star Daniel Kaluuya will star in the upcoming independent romance drama Queen & Slim, according to The Wrap. The screenplay was written by Lena Waithe, known for her work on Master of None and The Chi, based on an original idea and treatment from James Frey, bestselling author of A Million Little Pieces, and a story by Frey and Waithe. The film will mark the directorial feature debut for Melina Matsoukas, who helmed Insecure and Master of None, and won two Grammy Awards for her “We Found Love” and Beyonce’s “Formation” music videos.
The film will be produced by Brad Weston’s Makeready, which won the rights to finance the film after an intense bidding war.
Queen & Slim is described as a Bonnie and Clyde story sparked by a first date gone wrong. A black couple wind up killing a cop in self-defense after getting pulled over at a traffic stop and go on the run instead of turning themselves in.
“It’s about being black and trying to fall in love in a world that’s burning down around you,” Waithe, who the first black woman to win a comedy writing Emmy for the “Thanksgiving” episode of Master of None, said in a statement, per The Wrap.
“It’s a film that defines black love as a revolutionary act,” Matsoukas added. “It shows that our union is the greatest weapon against the assault on black people in America.”
Matsoukas and Waithe are still searching for a fresh face for the role of Queen.
