Hot off the heels of the announcement that he’ll be producing a House Party remake for New Line, NBA superstar, media mogul, just a kid from Akron, LeBron James has announced he’ll be producing an upcoming basketball film, Hustle.
Coming courtesy of LeBron’s SpringHill Entertainment and Legendary Entertainment, Hustle was a much-sought after spec script that was snatched up by Legendary’s Jay Ashenfelter. Written by in-demand screenwriter Taylor Materne, Hustle is centered on a down on his luck basketball scout who discovers a Chinese streetball prodigy and convinces him to travel to America to train for the NBA draft. While the young basketball talent deals with being a fish out of the water, the scout must deal with lingering family issues.
A former YA novelist, Materne has a former Black List script titled Times Square in development with Justin Lin set to direct and is currently hard at work on a spy thriller titled Marseilles, based on an original idea by Damien Chazelle.
Directing is rising talent Dave Meyers, coming off a Grammy win for his direction of Kendrick Lamar’s music video “Humble.” He also recently reteamed with the hip-hop artist on his music video for “All the Stars” a song from the Black Panther original soundtrack.
There’s no word on who will star in Hustle, but after LeBron’s last big film appearance in 2015’s Trainwreck, here’s hoping the generational basketball talent at least makes a cameo.
