In a holiday season packed with exciting new releases, none is more eagerly anticipated for fans of robots in disguise/1980s refugees than Bumblebee. In the aftermath of the bloated Transformers films that Michael Bay has been inflicting upon audiences over the last couple of years, this new film — hitting theaters on December 21st — takes a much needed back-to-basics approach.
Set in 1987, the prequel follows the beloved yellow punch buggy as he adjusts to life on Earth while lying low (and hiding his true form) in a Southern California junkyard. There he meets Charlie (Hailee Steinfeld), a soulful teenager who herself is trying to fit in. When the pair get thrust into an adventure that will change the planet and shape their shared destinies, they discover that friendship is, well, universal.
Transformers fans have been losing our minds over this film’s potential (and reviews seem to indicate that fans of the classic series will be very happy). While the wait until next Friday seems interminable at this point, we want to ease the pain a bit by showcasing this exclusive featurette from the film in which Steinfeld and director Travis Knight (Kubo and the Two Strings) discuss the film’s theme and how the similarities between them form an unlikely pairing unlike anything seen in the previous Transformers flicks. See for yourself:
We’ll have much more on Bumblebee as the movie’s release date approaches. This one’s going to be something special!
