Knives Out: Trailer, Cast, Release Date, and News

Star Wars: The Last Jedi director Rian Johnson will helm murder-mystery movie Knives Out, starring James Bond himself, Daniel Craig.

Knives Out might sound like a reference to the fandom that started a social media maelstrom in reaction to Star Wars: The Last Jedi, but it’s actually the title of a murder mystery that will serve as director Rian Johnson’s follow-up to that $1.3 billion worldwide-grossing Star Wars sequel. That fact alone gives Knives Out a good amount of gravitas as it touts a star in James Bond himself, Daniel Craig, who will be joined by Captain America himself, Chris Evans. The high-profile duo are joined by an incredible cast.

A surprise announcement at September’s Toronto Film Festival of Rian Johnson’s written/directorial follow-up movie – and the casting of star Daniel Craig – was a proverbial airhorn designed to preemptively attract prospective bidders at the industry festivities. Johnson not only directed the film off his own script, but served as a producer alongside repertory producing partner Ram Bergman.

And here’s the first trailer, which initially unveiled the mystery movie as a tounge-in-cheek style whodunnit. Besides the main character concept of Daniel Craig as a detective – seemingly Hercule Poirot with Foghorn Leghorn’s accent – the surreal scenario of Captain America actor Chris Evans cursing rapidly and effectively is also a hoot in its own right.

Knives Out Release Date

Knives Out Cast

Daniel Craig’s starring role in Knives Out was announced shortly after the untitled Bond 25 was hit with a major setback with the exit of director Danny Boyle, potentially taking his next shaken-not-stirred role reprisal off the table for the near future. Craig reportedly detached himself from the long-gestating Showtime limited TV series, Purity, as a result, but it created a small window where he coud play Det. Poirot, who Johnson clearly intends to be modele after Agatha Christie’s beloved Hercule Poirot. Christie’s classical Poirot was last portrayed on screen by Kenneth Branagh in a fun adaptation of Murder on the Orient Express.

About his casting, Johnson said, “He’s an actor of extraordinary range, and we are looking forward to the fun of finding that modern detective and collaborating with Daniel on creating a new Poirot.”

Joining star Daniel Craig in Knives Out is an all-star cast consisting of Christopher Plummer, Chris Evans, Ana De Armas, Jamie Lee Curtis, Don Johnson, Michael Shannon, Toni Collette, LaKeith Stanfield, Katherine Langford and Jaeden Martell.

Christopher Plummer (The Sound of Music, All the Money in the World) plays Harlan Thrombey, a crime novelist and wealthy patriarch of a rich family who brings all his disparate and dysfunctional relatives together for his 85th birthday in hopes of some of reconciling everyone’s grievances. He is found murdered for his trouble, hence the need for a detective.

Jamie Lee Curtis (Halloween, True Lies) plays Linda Drysdale, Harlan’s daughter with motives of her own to be sure.

Toni Collette (The Way Way Back, Velvet Buzzsaw) is Joni Thrombrey, another of Harlan’s daughters who kept the family name unlike her sister.

Chris Evans (Avengers: Endgame, Snowpiercer) is Ransom Drysdale, Linda’s son and a ne’er-do-well in the family.

Ana De Armas (Blade Runner 2049) is Marta, someone who is apparently not a member of the Thrombey family but is also a suspect.

Michael Shannon (The Shape of Water, Man of Steel) is Walt Thrombey, the disabled son of Harlan who takes umbrage at the the fact that Poirot thinks someone in the family could’ve killed his father. Or is he just prtending?

Lakeith Stanfield (Sorry to Bother You, Atlanta) plays Lt. Elliot, the police detective assigned to solve Harlan’s murder but gets more than he bargained for with Poirot unofficially taking over his case.

Don Johnson (Watchmen, Django Unchained) is Richard Drysdale, Linda’s husband who expects something out of the dead, rich father-in-law.

Jaeden Martell (It) plays one of Harlan’s presumably sweet grandchildren, Jacob Thrombey.
