Looking back at all the action movies of the last few years, one name rises above the crowd—and he wears no mask. I am of course talking about John Wick, Keanu Reeves’ dapper gent who laid waste to the entire Russian mob because they stole his car and killed his dog.
Few wars have begun for nobler a cause.
Essentially playing a character who is built up to be the death made flesh by all the other characters on screen, Reeves as John Wick had to simply stand there and look cool during the action scenes for the movie to work. And they worked really well with no CGI required.
John Wick: Chapter 2 Review
Our own Don Kaye had the chance to see John Wick: Chapter 2 early in February, and he gave us this thoughtful summation of why it is pretty goddamn great:
As for Reeves, he is exactly the same as in the first film, but his stiff, clipped demeanor works here to his advantage. Stahelski keeps large swaths of John Wick: Chapter 2 as non-verbal as possible, and his eye for unusual images, fully controlled sense of geography and spatial relationships, and mastery of action drives stretches of the film without anyone uttering barely a word. Perhaps the single most stunning moment is an extended sequence that takes place in a neon-lit house of mirrors, with Reeves, Rose, and Scamarcio all chasing each other through a beautiful kaleidoscope of glass and color that is the kind of feast for the eyes you just don’t see in most raggedly shot action films.
The film, of course, leaves the story open-ended and lays out the premise for a third chapter, but for once you leave the theater energized and inspired instead of exhausted and nursing a headache. Taking a little from Walter Hill’s classic The Warriors, and a bit more from the early work of John Woo, John Wick: Chapter 2 is as close to pure cinema as an action movie can come.

John Wick 2 Cast
The sequel is bringing back everyone still breathing from the first film… so, basically just Keanu Reeves Ian McShane, and John Leguizamo. Also, let us never forget Lance Reddick as the concierge of the Continental Hotel. However, Bridget Moynahan is also returning for presumably more flashbacks as John’s beloved dead wife.
New faces are also appearing, however, including rapper and actor Common (Selma, Suicide Squad), who will be playing the head of an unnamed female crime boss. But since Ruby Rose (Orange is the New Black) has been cast in an unspecified role, one does speculate…
Also appearing is Laurence Fishburne as “the Bowler King” and Peter Stormare.
John Wick 2 Plot
The full synopsis reads:
“Keanu Reeves returns in the sequel to the 2014 hit as legendary hitman John Wick who is forced to back out of retirement by a former associate plotting to seize control of a shadowy international assassins’ guild. Bound by a blood oath to help him, John travels to Rome where he squares off against some of the world’s deadliest killers.”
However for more fun ideas about what to expect, directors and stunt choreographers Stahelski and Leitch previously told Movies.com the following.
“We have ideas for days and without blinking twice, we know we can outdo the action from the original. It’s the matter of story and how much you like the character. That’s always the most important. If there’s great action, but you have a character that no one likes, and doesn’t have charisma, you’re not going to watch it. Look at any great action star, whether it’s Harrison Ford or Liam Neeson, or Robert Downey Jr., pick a name, you love the guy first. Good action, bad action, you just love them in action. So, we want to make sure we have a story and a character that everybody loves, and then we’ll dress it with action that we promise will be awesome.”
