The new trailer for Dark Phoenix (otherwise known as X-Men: Dark Phoenix) has arrived and it’s pretty, well, dark.
Following on from 2016’s Apocalypse and based on the celebrated comic storyline The Dark Phoenix Saga, the film sees Jean Grey (Sophie Turner) consumed by a cosmic entity during a space mission.
On Jean’s return to Earth, the powerful ‘Phoenix Force’ starts to take over – encouraged by Jessica Chastain’s mysterious villain (the “devil on Jean’s shoulder,” according to writer/director Simon Kinberg) – and it’s up to the X-Men, led by James McAvoy’s Professor X, to stop her.
You can watch the trailer below. Be warned, though: if you want to go into this cold, it seemingly gives away a massive – and potentially spoilery – plot point…
So, um, things not looking too rosy for Jennifer Lawrence’s Mystique, there (“Why did you make me do that? She was my friend…”). It’s surprising they’d tease such a big moment in the trailer, though, so don’t expect everything to be as it seems.
Elsewhere, with its space-mission-gone-wrong vibe showing the Phoenix Force as an actual cosmic entity, the trailer does at least allay some fears that the film bears any similarity to X-Men: The Last Stand – the series’ (and writer Kinberg’s) previous attempt at adapting the comic arc, which relegated the Phoenix to a split personality of Jean’s.
This could potentially be the last instalment proper (we’re still waiting on The New Mutants) in the X-Men franchise as we know it, with the Disney-Fox deal meaning that the rights to the uncanny mutants will revert back to Marvel, their spiritual home. If that is the case, can Dark Phoenix end the series on a high? We’ll find out when the film hits cinemas on June 7. We have everything you need to know about the movie right here.
